Our commitment to sustainability
Our Commitment to Sustainability, Responsibility and the Environment.
Here at Wood Pigeon Lodge we:
- Recycle all glass, metal, plastics, soap and paper that we can
- Use both sides of office paper for weather/ski report print-outs
- Compost all vegetable based food scraps for vegetable growing
- Feed to our dogs meat and milk based scraps
- Built or refurbished The Hut and Barn using sustainably grown timber or recycled materials
- Clean and reuse rubbish bags
- Do all our own linen and either line-dry or use the wood-fired, home heating to dry sheets and towels
- Use only biodegradable cleaning products from recyclable containers
We:-
- Grow our own vegetables all year round and use the sun to heat glass houses to produce food crops that otherwise won’t grow in our climate
- Grow, use and re-plant our own firewood gradually relying less on foraged native logs
- Use solar energy and ‘wet backs’ to heat the water and advise short showers so everyone gets some
- Collect and store fresh, clean and pure rain water for all household and livestock needs and supply this with no chemical treatment.
- Encourage use of this water to reduce plastic waste and cost to guests. (Bring your own empty bottles and fill from the taps!)
- Supply half and full flush cisterns
- Hand milk a cow and produce butter, yoghurt and cheese. Un-pasteurised milk can be ordered in season - August to May, further reducing plastic waste
- Use sunlight as a passive heating source. - We advise you to open the curtains before leaving for your day’s activities to return to a warmer lodge and close them after dusk
- Have planted hundreds of native plants to encourage and feed the birds and maintain a trapping and poisoning programme to kill rodents and mustelids which predate our local kiwi, blue duck and smaller native species
