The Tongariro Alpine Crossing
1 day walk / 5—7 hours, 19.4 km.
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing track passes over varied and spectacular volcanic terrain. In the presence of active volcanoes you can experience some of Tongariro National Park’s special gifts.
A cold mountain spring, lava flows, an active crater, steam vents, emerald-coloured lakes and magnificent views all combine to make this an enjoyable and memorable trip.
This trip is known as "the best one-day walk in New Zealand".
Although only a day walk, you must be prepared for rapid and severe weather changes — temperatures can easily drop below 5 degrees. November through to April is the best season for the walk, although a guided walk in winter offers a dramatic snow and ice landscape.
(See www.adriftnz.co.nz if you would like to cross in winter.)
A transport service is available daily (weather permitting) from National Park Village (5 minutes south of Wood Pigeon Lodge) to the start of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing; alternatively you can be picked up from Wood Pigeon Lodge. The same service also collects you at the end of your walk.
